DIY Wedding

Just a quick post about my brother’s wedding because it was one of the more unique ones I’ve ever been to. From the day of their engagement in Orlando, K.C. and Megan said instead of a wedding with a party they wanted to have a party with a wedding squeezed in at some point. K.C. even had to talk her into the whole walking-down-the-aisle thing.

I was asked to be one of two people taking the official pictures during the weekend. In fact, when I arrived, K.C. mentioned that zero professionals had been hired at all. He wasn’t bragging and he wasn’t upset. He was just saying that’s how we’re doing it and, yes, if you’re offering, your help is welcome.

With Dad and K.C. I’ve never figured out how to smile and take a selfie at the same time.

They rented out two huge cabins at Table Rock Lake in Missouri, just west of Branson, for what was basically a four day party. My parents rented another house about half a mile down the road for family. Guests began to arrive Friday afternoon with most arriving Saturday and the wedding on Sunday afternoon. Family and friends (and the bride and groom themselves) did the cooking, decorating, setting up, and cleaning. Did it all go exactly as planned? Of course not, but where would be the fun in that?

The ceremony itself took place in the yard just north of the cabins and was performed by the friend who introduced them (I was serious about that no-professionals thing). Even the official start was just sometime between 4:00 and 6:00pm. When everyone was ready, guests were alerted to go ahead and start being seated while I queued up the music on an iPad played over a large portable speaker. Weather rolled in right as we were finishing up the outdoor reception dinner. Speeches and the first dance took place on the wrap-around balcony of the main cabin as the sun set and a gentle rain fell. That part, I suppose, was perfect.
